Subaru BRZ

It’s been a minute since I’ve driven a manual transmission but, in the BRZ, I wouldn’t want it any other way!

The Subaru BRZ remains one of the purest, most engaging affordable sports cars available in 2026. This rear-wheel-drive coupe, co-developed with Toyota (as the GR86 twin), prioritizes driver involvement over raw power or luxury frills. Its 2.4-liter naturally aspirated boxer-four engine produces 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque—enough for lively acceleration (0-60 mph in the low 6-second range) without overwhelming the lightweight chassis..

The real magic lies in the handling. The BRZ offers razor-sharp steering with excellent feedback, a near-perfect 50/50 weight distribution, and a playful yet controllable balance that encourages pushing limits on twisty roads. The standard six-speed manual transmission is crisp and rewarding, while the optional automatic suits daily driving. The ride is firm but composed, absorbing imperfections better than expected for a sports car, though highway noise can intrude. The tS trim elevates this with STI-tuned suspension, Brembo brakes, and stickier tires for track-capable precision.

Inside, the cabin is driver-focused: supportive front seats, intuitive controls, and a simple infotainment system. Rear seats are token (better for bags), and cargo space is decent for the class. It’s practical enough for commuting, with solid fuel economy (up to 30 mpg highway).

Critics praise its thrills-per-dollar ratio—often earning 10/10 verdicts from outlets like Car and Driver, which calls it a high-water mark for fun, affordable sports cars. Drawbacks include modest straight-line speed compared to turbo rivals, a somewhat flat exhaust note, and no all-wheel drive . Every time I get the chance to take a BRZ for a drive, especially on a track, I buckle up. It’s always a fun drive.

For enthusiasts seeking connection over brute force, the 2026 BRZ (starting around $37,000 for the base Limited) delivers soulful driving joy that’s increasingly rare. It’s not the fastest or most comfortable, but it’s one of the most rewarding cars on sale today.

We give the BRZ 4.5 Lambos.
